Today morning there was great excitement in our household as Aditi lost her first tooth and then immediately after, the second one too. Bottom row. About two weeks ago, she noticed her tooth wiggle and has been shaking it non stop to make it fall. Lot of discussions have happened with her friends about their own experiences and ideas ranged from biting hard into an apple to pulling out the tooth using dental floss. The child who hates apples pestered me to buy one, but it didn't work. I am actually surprised it took so long for the tooth to fall out given the nonstop wiggling Aditi has done to it.
Since yesterday Aditi has been complaining that her wiggly tooth is hurting and when i checked it today morning i could see it was ready to fall off. I was scared she might swallow it when she eats her food, so i got a really soft paper tissue and shook the tooth this way and that and then tugged on it gently, lo the tooth was out. Out flowed a whole lot of blood and when just presssing on it did not stop it, Mr.Appa was called upon to bring ice. Big sister Nidhi akka was asked to close curtains as i like to believe the tooth is not to be shown to sky or else the new tooth would take a long time to sprout! :-) And before any of this happened i just said "it's out, it's out" in a soft voice and Santosh turned it into a war cry and Nidhi came running and we all started clapping for Aditi and she was so excited and wanted to run to the mirror to see how she looks. :-) Like i said, it was exciting. To put it mildly.
The newly removed tooth went into a tiny treasure box her teacher had given her specially for this purpose. And immediately after, i used the same procedure to pull out her second tooth. It was a bit of a relief for Aditi not to have wiggly teeth anymore. The second tooth brought forth more blood and further pressure with tissue and ice was needed. Ultimately, we filled three tissues with blood. I had asked Aditi to close her eyes so she doesn't start panicking on seeing this whole lot of blood.
Santosh remarked how cool and calm i was being about pulling out the teeth and the bleeding that followed. I said that's what Moms do and blood is not something we are scared about. Then i asked Aditi to open her eyes and look at the tissues and not be scared of a little blood. There will be much more to see and bear in future. I have done the same with Nidhi and it has helped a lot that when she had her first period, although she was a bit scared, she did not freak out completely. There is so much more to come when we have a baby, etc. i try and teach my kids not to freak out, rather try and handle the situation. Sounds a bit cold-blooded, but it helps when a child gets hurt and u might have to do first aid to control the bleeding. Or when u have ur first period. Or when u give birth.
Moms r strong and we want our kids to be strong too! Don't get fazed easily...
